Iphone 4 vs Motorola Droid X
With the iPhone 5 already under development and its release much anticipated by cellular phone users, some question what the difference is between software giant Apple and other phones using software such as Android. After all, Apple has done some truly amazing things with their products, but that's not to say other mobile software developers aren't right behind them. Even the difference in cost is almost negligible when either buying a plan or purchasing the phone outright. While each phone has its own weaknesses, it's the strengths combined with personal preference which usually seals the deal for consumers.
Camera
If you're like most cellular users and find the thought of carrying around multiple electronics painful, both Droid and iPhone have you covered. The iPhone comes with a 5MP camera and 720p video resolution. The Droid steps it up with a 8MP camera and 720p video resolution. Both the iPhone and Droid also have flash with single and dual LEDs, respectively. However, most agree that with iPhone's touch-to-focus features and it's better adaptability to lighting challenges it's a serious contender against the Droid phone which simply looks better on paper.
Web Support
While both phones sport the WebKit engine, Apple refuses to support flash in favor of QuickTime, a fact that Droid capitalizes on. For those waiting around for flash capability, it probably just won't happen—Apple likes to keep things exclusive. As far as advanced connectivity goes, both devices offer tethering so you can connect other devices to your phone and receive Internet. However, this typically is added as an extra option to your plan and costs usually run about $20/month for a capped amount of data transfer. An advantage the Droid has over iPhone is its ability to actually be a wireless HotSpot for multiple computers at once.
Apps
Both iPhone and Android software are capable of downloading your basic staple applications most consumers use. Games, scheduling apps, shopping apps and social networking apps are the bread and butter of the mobile phone industry and both phones have enough apps to keep you busy with those main categories. However, for more specialized applications or those offered by smaller businesses, chance is they are exclusive to Apple. Currently there are about 350,000 apps for iPhone, a significantly higher number than Android's 150,000. However, the market for Android apps is growing rapidly and is even expected to surpass the amount of apps available for the iPhone.
Resolution
There's no use quibbling about it—iPhone 4 wins hands down with its 640x960 “Retina Display” resolution. Packed into a 3.5” screen, it's often reported as the highest quality screen currently available to mobile phone users. The Droid X is close behind at 480x854, but it also has a larger screen size measuring 4.3” for a bigger display. There are pros and cons to both and they depend on your personal preferences. If you like crystal clear, you'll want to consider the iPhone; if you prefer a large viewing area and don't mind a little lower resolution, Droid will offer you one of the largest viewing screens currently available. In either case, both have impressive resolution and playback capabilities for media junkies and gamers.
Operating System and Processor
For most people, this isn't the most important thing that comes to mind in a phone, but since it does define the products, it's worth mentioning. The iPhone 4 uses its own operating system developed by Apple called iOS 4. This offers an interface capable of multitasking and organizes application into “touchable” objects which are used for navigation of virtually every major application. Droid, on the other hand, which uses Android OS (multiple versions) is capable of a more “updates style dashboard” which can be vaguely compared to Windows Mobile. In addition, both use a 1Ghz processor for faster navigation. For storage, the iPhone 4 comes in a 16GB and 32GB version while Droid can use microSD cards to expand memory up to 40GB and enable the user to swap cards out as needed. |

Verizon iPhone 4 vs At&t iPhone4 and iPhone 5 Rumors.
By: Brea Buffaloe
There’s always a time when we hope there’s some truth to the rumors. This was the case for the infamous “iPhone 4 will be available on Verizon’s network” rumor, and now 4.5 million Verizon Wireless customers are reveling in it’s truth.
On January 11th, 2011, Verizon announced the launch of the iPhone 4 on its network would be on February 10th, 2011. According to app usage data analysis done by Localytics, Verizon already accounts for 32% of the iPhone 4 market in the United States and had started off with almost a 20% share in the first week. In the second quarter alone, Verizon has activated 2.3 million new units compared to AT&T’s 3.6 million units, which includes the iPhone 3GS.
The biggest difference between Verizon’s iPhone and AT&T’s iPhone is that on Verizon’s CDMA network you can’t use data while making a call. Some customers don’t mind this fact since on Verizon it’s more likely for them to be able to make a call at all. According to ChangeWave Research, AT&T customers report a 4.8% dropped call rate while Verizon customers only report a 1.8% rate. Another perk of owning a Verizon iPhone is that you can turn your phone into a mobile hotspot for an additional 20 dollars a month.
What about the iPhone 5? There is no official release date for the phone, however, rumors suggest a September or October release date. Verizon’s COO, Lowell McAdam stated, “We don’t know when the next one is going to come out. You will have to as Apple that, but we expect that probably sometime in the fall…” Verizon customers are hoping that the new phone will be compatible on the faster, more advanced LTE (Long Term Evolution) network.
International Business Times says, “The really hot features to expect in iPhone 5 include NFC, an upgraded iOS 5 with cloud-integration, music streaming and voice interface, 4G connectivity, 8MP camera, A5 processor and an embedded social networking tool.” NFC (Near-Field Communications) is a tool that allows a consumer to wave or tap their phone over a receiver to complete a transaction. This will allow iPhone 5 users to provide credit card information and make payments more easily. Some other rumored features include full 1080p HD video capabilities, a better flash and a bigger display.
With the release of the iPhone 5 on both Verizon and AT&T’s networks it will be exciting to see which provider comes out on top. Will AT&T be able to exploit that its customers are capable of using data and voice simultaneously or will the belief that Verizon has better service with fewer dropped calls play an important role in consumer decisions? What’s even more exciting is finding out what features Apple will surprise us with this time, especially since we’ve waited so long. Hopefully we’ll see this fall. |
